As gas prices hit record highs, people keep hitting the road

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) — Gasoline prices are at an all-time high, and AAA says we’re heading into one of the most expensive Memorial Day weekends ever. But travelers from the north of the country were not putting their plans in place on Friday.

As they waited out rain at a rest area near Route 81, the Reese family from the Utica-Rome area recalled how much they had recently spent on gas.

“Usually we budget around $300 a month for gas, and I understand that as of May 20, we’ve already spent $580,” Gordon Reese said.

Doubling the price – a cause for concern.

“Of course you are worried, but you cannot control it. This is the sad part. said Joanne Reese.

Meanwhile, at a gas station in Adams, $4.94 a gallon for $6.49 regular diesel.

For Nick Britton’s diesel truck to travel the 90 miles to Wellesley Island, he’s ready to dispense a good chunk of change.

“It’s probably a back and forth tank. Probably around $160, $170,” he said.

While he’s keeping the Memorial Day tradition alive this year, Britton says he’s made some sacrifices.

“I mean you go less places. We’ve traveled a lot less this year, that’s for sure,” he said.

According to AAA, this weekend will be one of the most expensive Memorial Day travel periods ever, and nearly 35 million people are expected to splash out and travel anyway.
