The Dish: Jerk Chicken Taco, One of Many Choices at Tacorita | Food and cooking

It’s never too late to make a first visit, and this week was a perfect example. I had my first Tacorita tacos.

Downtown Auburn’s restaurant sits on Main Street in Auburn’s recognizable corner. It was pretty crowded when I arrived, so I thought it must be good, and other customers came after me.

I knew Tacorita would have tacos. It’s in the name. But what I didn’t know was the number of options available. There are many. And I mean a lot, Southern Fried Chicken and BBQ Pork with Firecracker Shrimp and BLT. The menu also includes quesadillas and enchiladas, which you can customize, as well as sides, soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, drinks and desserts. Trust me, you will find something.

I decided to get the Two Taco Combo from the Lunch Specials menu and of course you choose your tacos from the restaurant list. My choices were the Jerk Chicken taco, which is Jamaican-style jerk chicken, lettuce, and fresh mango chutney, and the Plain Jane taco, which is ground beef, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheese.

The combo also comes with a choice of three sides and a drink. I went with fries and salsa on my side. And Tacorita’s tacos are served on soft flour tortillas, but you can ask for soft corn tortillas or a lettuce wrap.

The Plain Jane taco was good. I felt it was important to order this one because of my love for ground beef with Mexican food. The taco was a good size and had lots of meat, just like my other taco. I liked it, but the Jerk Chicken taco was my favorite. It was fantastic.

Jerk chicken is one of the restaurant’s spicy choices. It brought a bit of heat but wasn’t overwhelming. The jerk chicken slices were so well seasoned and the use of fresh mango chutney was awesome. It was one of the best tacos I have ever tasted.

The salsa was quite nice too. It was different from what I expected. It didn’t seem as heavy on the tomatoes, although I do enjoy a salsa that is heavy on the tomatoes. It was really good. I couldn’t stop eating it. With taxes, my lunch cost $10.89.

I have already decided to return to Tacorita and would definitely recommend giving it a try if you haven’t. I’ll have another jerk chicken taco…well, probably two.
